A History of Advantage FCU

It all began in the 1930's

In 1930 and 1931 a small but bold group of about twenty teachers and administrators began meeting disclosing their frustrations of wary bankers attitudes towards school employees.  In a time of a Great Depression, money was a necessity that was not always available.  With these meetings an idea of saving and working together in order to earn higher interest rates and lending money to fellow employees who are in need was established.  Thus, a credit union was born on October 14, 1931:  The Rochester Teachers Credit Union.

1970's

In 1974, the field of membership, which at the time only included teachers employed by the Rochester City School District, was expanded to include ALL city school district employees.  The name of the credit union was changed to Rochester School Employees Credit Union.

1980's

In the spring of 1985 a conversion to a federal charter was completed.  The field of membership was again expanded in the summer of 1986 to include the employees of the University of Rochester and Strong Memorial Hospital.

In March of 1988, the credit union's name was changed to Advantage Federal Credit Union.  In June 1988, Advantage merged with Baden-Ormond Federal Credit Union.  In October 1988, a second merger took affect with the Genessee Hospital Federal Credit Union.

We continue to grow...

Since the 1980's Advantage has continued to grow with additional small employee groups who have been added through the years.

In May 2009, Advantage merged with Highland Hospital Credit Union.  This merger resulted in many enhanced features and benefits for Highland Hospital employees.

In August 2009, Advantage opened their NEW branch doors in Gates; 1975 Buffalo Road!  This NEW branch is Advantage's FIFTH branch operating in Rochester, NY.
